Writers Guild Announces 2010's Best Screenplays

Black Swan posterFive original and five adapted screenplays have been selected by the Writers Guild of America as the best offerings of 2010, increasing their chances of being nominated for Academy Awards in the screenwriting categories. The WGA has chosen Black Swan (screenplay by Mark Heyman and Andres Heinz and John McLaughlin; story by Andres Heinz), The Fighter (screenplay by Scott Silver and Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson; story by Keith Dorrington & Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson), Inception, (screenplay by Christopher Nolan), The Kids Are All Right (screenplay by Lisa Cholodenko & Stuart Blumberg), and Please Give (screenplay by Nicole Holofcener) as the five nominees in their Original Screenplay category.

The WGA's Adapted Screenplay nominees are 127 Hours (screenplay by Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy), I Love You Phillip Morris (screenplay by John Requa & Glenn Ficarra), The Social Network (screenplay by Aaron Sorkin), The Town (screenplay by Peter Craig and Ben Affleck & Aaron Stockard), and True Grit (screenplay by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen).

Last year's original screenplay winner, Mark Boal and The Hurt Locker, went on to take home the Oscar. However, the WGA's adapted screenplay winners, Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner for Up in the Air, lost out at the Academy Awards to Geoffrey Fletcher and Precious. This year's winners will be announced on February 5th.
