Garden State Soundtrack

Sept 1, 2004 - Epic Records had good news to announce about the release of the soundtrack to "Garden State." Three weeks after hitting stores, the soundtrack doubled its sales and reached #25 on Billboard's Top 200 and #2 on the Top Soundtracks chart.

Writer/director/actors Zach Braff ("Scrubs") chose each of the songs on the soundtrack to fit the style and tone of his film. Braff believed the movie's soundtrack was an absolutely integral part of his film. "Essentially, I just made a mix CD of the music that I felt was scoring my late twenties," Braff said in a press release issued by Epic Records. "I never imagined that so many people of so many different ages would respond to the same bands that inspire me. I guess the coolest thing about the soundtrack's success is that it shows the labels that there's a bona fide desire for this kind of music. That, and the fact that my grandmother's driving around Boca Raton cranking Coldplay."

6. Marlin the clownfish gathers quite a varied group of friends -- other fish, sharks, sea turtles and pelicans -- as he searches for his son. Would these creatures all get along with each other in real life?
Davidson: As charming as animal friends are in any animated movie, it is unlikely that these animals would associate with each other in real life. Many animals will form close associations with other animals of the same species, and there are a few instances on associations between species (such as the clownfish and the anemones), but the group from the movie would be pretty unnatural.

However, it is possible to keep many different types of fish together in an aquarium setting, and they will get along all right. For example, it is possible to keep the clownfish, moorish idol, and tang together without any problems, provided that the aquarium is large enough. Sea turtles can be kept with sharks and fish in the same system. However, I suspect a pelican would go after the fish pretty quickly if given the opportunity!

7: Nemo has one front fin that's smaller than the other. Would this be a problem for a real clownfish?
Davidson: Actually, many fish adapt just fine to losing a fin. It does impair their ability to maneuver, which makes them more vulnerable to predators in the natural environment. In an aquarium setting, however, their lives can be just as long and healthy as their fully finned counterparts.

8. Would fish and sea turtles really surf the currents like they do in the movie?
Davidson: I'm not sure if any fish actually seek out ocean currents to aid in long-distance travel, although I would not be surprised if this happens. Many species of fish migrate between different areas seasonally, and it stands to reason that they may be following currents.

An example would be cod that spend winters in offshore, deeper waters, and return to shallower coastal waters in the spring and summer. Fish certainly get caught in large ocean currents accidentally and are carried into new waters -- sometimes ones in which they cannot survive.

For example, the Gulf Stream frequently carries tropical fish up the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. from the south and into more northern waters off New England. The fish may be able to survive there for the summer, but they die off in the fall and winter when the water gets too cold.

9. Would a squid really squirt ink when it gets excited?
Davidson: Squids will ink as a defensive mechanism. Generally it doesn't happen too often, unless they find themselves the frequent target of a predator.

10: If a fish swam to an ocean depth where there is no light, could it survive?
Davidson: The sunlit or "euphotic" zone actually extends down about 600 feet. Below this, there is not enough light for plants to grow, so it is called the diphotic (twilight) zone. At about 3,000 feet below sea level, the aphotic (complete darkness) zone begins. As the water gets deeper, the pressure becomes immense. For example, at the bottom of the sunlit zone (600 feet), the pressure is more than 18 times stronger than at the surface. Only fish specially adapted to this kind of pressure can survive. The clownfish and the blue tang would be squished. Clownfish are generally found at depths no greater than 50 feet, and blue tangs can be found to about 140 feet.

Gemma Arterton will play Jeremy Renner's sister in Paramount Pictures' Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters to be directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow). The Hollywood Reporter reports Arterton, seen in 2010's Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia and Tamara Drewe, beat out a field that included Noomi Rapace (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Eva Green (Casino Royale) for the lead role in the fairytale drama.

This Hansel and Gretel story is going to be quite different than the familiar Brothers Grimm fairytale. Witch Hunters takes place years after the siblings escaped from the witch by shoving her in an oven. Now all grown up, the two have become witch hunters - which you probably guessed from the film's title.

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions is producing the movie, with filming likely to get squeezed in between the end of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and the start of The Avengers in order to accommodate Renner's busy schedule.

Producers Guild Nominations Announced

The Producers Guild of America has revealed their nominees for the best of 2010, with most of the usual suspects showing up on their lists. However, noticeably absent is Winter's Bone, the character-driven drama set in the Ozarks which has been included on most short lists of possible Best Picture Oscar nominees. The PGA nominees usually fall pretty close in step to the Academy's choices for the best films of the year (expanded to 10 from 5), although last year the PGA went with Star Trek and Invictus while Academy members opted for The Blind Side and A Serious Man. Both the Academy and the PGA awarded The Hurt Locker top honors in 2010.

Filmmaker Judd Apatow will be hosting the 22nd Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony on January 22nd.

McG to Direct Ouija

Even if Christopher Nolan or Tim Burton were at the helm, I'm still not sure I'd be interested in seeing a movie based on Hasbro's Ouija boards. Those things really freak me out, so sitting through two hours of a film inspired by the spooky board game isn't my idea of a fun time at the movies. That said, the film's moving forward at Universal Pictures with McG (Terminator Salvation) in negotiations to direct, so says The Hollywood Reporter.

Ouija is said to be a supernatural adventure from writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (the Tron: Legacy screenwriting team). Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes and Hasbro's Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir are producing. Pierre Morel had been in talks to direct but left the project back in November over creative differences. The project's also gone through a few screenwriters before reaching the hands of Kitsis and Horowitz.

Filming is expected to begin this summer with Universal eyeing a November 2012 release. The studio's also working on another Hasbro toy-inspired film, Battleship starring Alexander Skarsgard and Taylor Kitsch, set for release in May 2012. The third Hasbro film in the works, Stretch Armstrong with Taylor Lautner, has been delayed until 2013.

Monsters Director Gareth Edwards to Helm Godzilla

Gareth Edwards is capitalizing on the success of his indie monster movie by tackling the job of directing Godzilla. The Hollywood Reporter says Edwards hasn't totally committed to the project yet, but is close to signing on to handle the job of bringing the iconic creature back to life on the big screen for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.

Most Godzilla fans still harbor ill feelings towards Hollywood's most recent effort at making a Godzilla film (the 1998 disaster starring Matthew Broderick), so let's hope Legendary Pictures - which bought the rights to Godzilla from Toho Co. in early 2010 - has something worthy planned for the giant Tokyo-smashing creature. When Legendary and Warner Bros announced they were moving forward on a new Godzilla back in March 2010, Chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures Thomas Tull stated, "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed the character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."

Edwards' was practically a one-man show when he worked on Monsters, wearing multiple hats as writer, director, cinematographer, and visual effects supervisor. For less than $1 million, Edwards created a monster movie that delivered scares, had decent character development, and creepy tentacled aliens. It'll be interesting to see what he can do with a big budget and more resources.

Tim McGraw Discusses Country Strong

Tim McGraw stars in Country Strong, the story of a troubled, alcoholic country singer and her relationships with an up-and-coming singer/songwriter as well as her manager/husband. Gwyneth Paltrow plays the country singer struggling to deal with her demons. Garrett Hedlund, recently seen opposite Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy, is the younger man she falls for while undergoing a stint in rehab. And Country star Tim McGraw plays Paltrow's character's husband who puts business interests above his wife's health.

Surprisingly, while Paltrow and Hedlund get to show off their singing voices, McGraw - who is a genuine superstar in the music industry - doesn't have a single opportunity to sing. But that was fine by McGraw who, at the LA press day for the Screen Gems film, said he totally understands why he wasn't afforded an opportunity to show off his talent. Read on...

Matt Damon to Receive Joel Siegel Award at Critics' Choice Movie Awards

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (of which I'm a member) has named Matt Damon as the recipient of the 4th Annual Joel Siegel Award, a special award presented to celebrities who make significant contributions off the screen, to be presented at the 16th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards. The award was created in honor of BFCA member / Good Morning America film critic Joel Siegel who passed away from cancer in 2007.

Announcing the award, BFCA President Joey Berlin stated, ?"Matt personifies the values celebrated by the Joel Siegel Award. Among his many charitable endeavors, Matt's work as co-founder of Water.org has inspired us to honor him. The profound mission of Water.org is to help bring a day when everyone on the planet can take a safe drink of water. Matt is also a founder of Not On Our Watch, which focuses global attention and resources to stop and prevent mass atrocities. He helps fight AIDS and poverty as a supporter of the ONE Campaign. He is also an ambassador for ONEXONE, a non-profit foundation committed to supporting, preserving and improving the lives of children at home in the United States and around the world, and a spokesperson for Feeding America, this country's largest hunger-relief organization. Twilight: Eclipse, Johnny Depp, Adam Sandler Win People's Choice Awards

The people have voted and guess what? Twilight: Eclipse won a few awards at the People's Choice Awards. Are you surprised? No? I didn't really think you would be. Those glittering vampires, hunky werewolves, and the high school student they love came away winners at the event held January 5th in Los Angeles. Twilight: Eclipse was named Favorite Movie and Favorite Drama Movie. Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner earned the title of Favorite On Screen Team, and Stewart also picked up the Favorite Movie Actress trophy. Johnny Depp beat out Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner (they probably split the vote) in the Favorite Movie Actor category.

Also earning People's Choice Awards were Adam Sandler for Favorite Comedic Star, Zac Efron for Favorite Movie Star Under 25, and Jackie Chan for Favorite Action Star. A Nightmare on Elm Street was named Favorite Horror Movie while Grown Ups won as Favorite Comedy Movie. The Favorite Action Film was Iron Man 2 and Toy Story 3 was proclaimed to be the Favorite Family Movie.

Francis Lawrence May Direct Unbroken

Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) recently wrapped up work on the film adaptation of Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants, starring Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, and Christoph Waltz, and now he's in talks to direct Unbroken for Universal Pictures. Deadline reports Universal bought the rights to Laura Hillenbrand's bestseller Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption and the studio's interested in bringing in Crazy Heart's writer/director Scott Cooper to adapt the book.

The World War II era epic tells the amazing true story of Louis Zamperini. Random House offers this description of Hillenbrand's book:

"On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane's bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.
The lieutenant's name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he'd been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.
